That axle is gone , along with the housing. This means the entire rear end needs to be replaced.
Differential gears are still good, though.
The...bearings? I’m not even sure.
The brake shoes. Wow, that’s a lot of gunk.
Axle shaft housing. Note the metal scoring up top, where the axle had been grinding against. Oh, and all the metal shavings...
And the star of today’s episode of Killer Queen...
I am seriously considering having the service shop source a brand new replacement, instead of going for used. Problem is, I’m not sure where I could get one for a reasonable price, and it needs to be a 3.27:1 Trac-loc limited slip differential that came with my 2010 Ford Crown Victoria Police Interceptor.
This is going to hurt the bank.

It’s a Ford 8.8, parts are plentiful and inexpensive.

You call $1300 for a remanufactured 3.27:1 with trac-loc LSD, inexpensive? Okay then. :P Either way, my savings account is ready for the pain.

It could be worse price wise, mk4 Supra LSD diffs go for in excess of $1500 untouched (used, not reman).
In this case you can get a whole rebuilt axle that you know will have good bearings and seals, ready to go another 150,000 miles

Get a Vic that was used as a Citizen Patrol vehicle next time.

When the 10-bolt rear on my ‘99 Suburban failed, I upgraded to a 14-bolt semi-float and it cost me $8,000! Fortunately, the replacement part came with an entire way-nicer Suburban attached...
If you want to be adventurous, swap n a junkyard rear. I did it on my Jeep in the college dorm parking lot. Security scolded me when I had the axle removed... they said “you can’t work on your car here”, to which I replied “good luck figuring out how to get it on a tow truck”. They allowed me to proceed.

Too late for that, I already sealed the deal with Chevy of Everett for a reman’d transmission. Managed to talk the price down by $600.
